Revenant's End Capital
Return to World Setting
Arc
The current capital of the Federated Territories is a grand city seated on its easternmost border, overlooking the ocean. Legends say it was the largest of the surviving cities after the Dusk, a catastrophic event that brought humanity to its knees. They say that the few remaining leaders of the old empire began to consolidate here, hoping to rebuild the glorious past. Those early rulers of Arc believed they had a divine mandate to unite the people under the one banner again; a mandate they have passed to their successors.
Through the centuries, the remaining settlements and regions around Arc have been brought under its sway. Today, it is the most densely populated region on the continent. Churches to every known god have populated these streets. The land and the estuary at the mouth of the River Arca have been reclaimed and modified for industry and living; the surrounding landscape populated by towns and villages that provide perishable goods to a city grown far too big to sustain itself alone. No longer simply a gathering of the lost remnants of humanity, now it is a living beast of its own, its actions governed by complex webs of power.
It is here, of course, that the highest seats of legislative and religious power in the Federated Territories are contained. Decision on deployment of the nation’s forces, engineer corps, or religious missionaries all flow from the capital. Arc’s leaders seek to reduce social friction through a unity of thought in all matters of science and belief, lest another cataclysm occur.
Close to these centres of power are the houses of the wealthy. Opulent and oversized, these uniform structures conform to all the modern ideals of perfect mathematics and geomancy. Around them, the city’s geomatical engineers have laid out the streets for the growing middle class, but space runs thin.
Crammed against the inner walls and sprawling beyond them lie the slums and industry. The poorest people work long hours for little pay and no future. These areas reek of smoke, metal and decay. Metallurgy factories belch fumes and slaughterhouses churn out leather and witches' fetishes. The waterways are clogged with rotting vegetable waste, festering in the heat from kilns and furnaces that fuel the city’s growth. Underneath these streets and known by few, there is a hidden, secret city; the skeleton of the former city from ancient times. These passages and remaining structures are a refuge for rebels, the poor and forsaken. These dark paths are not safe, but neither, for some, is the surface.
Some say that for every soul drawn to Arc to learn from the riches it has gathered, there are two souls crushed beneath its boot, desperate to get out.
